Class Descriptions

​Dance With Me   

This  program provides a bonding experience for the parent and child.  With Mommy or Daddy (any family member or caregiver can participate) close by, students will engage in hands-on movement activities essential to proper development in coordination. Music and movement will stimulate the senses.   Songs and dances involving  simple directions encourages language. The students build self-confidence as they learn to make friends and relate to the teacher.  Parents love this opportunity to be a part of their child's dance education.

 

Create and Dance   

Learn all about dance, music, and art all in one class! Dancers will develop motor skills while moving their bodies to the music. They will also have a chance to create something to bring home and share with the family. Tap will also be incorporated in this fun class.. This class will do one dance in the annual recital.

 

Intro to Ballet / Tap / Jazz     

This class introduces the young dancer to the basics of the ballet barre, center work, and across the floor combinations. Basic tap steps are continued from Creative Movement and the basics of jazz dance are introduced. This class will do two dances in our annual recital.

 

Ballet     

A classical dance form using grace and precision as well as formalized steps and gestures.  Intricate, flowing patterns are used to create expression through movement. Coordination of arms, legs, and head,  as well as total body awareness is part of the training.   In ballet students  learn the fundamentals of ballet barre exercises,  which  emphasize proper body placement, center work,  and moving across the floor. As the ballet  levels become more complex, it builds on the material learned in the previous levels. As students progress through the advanced levels, combination of steps and changes of rhythm and direction are incorporated.  Serious ballet  students are encouraged to train  more frequently in preparation for pointe work.

 

Pointe   

All pointe students are required to take ballet class at least twice each  week. Pointe requires strength and proper body alignment. Students are chosen for pointe work on an individual basis at the discretion of the directors.

 

Jazz   

This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance. Jazz class consists of warmup, center floor exercises, progressions and combinations, training in proper technique, strength, and flexibility.

 

Tap  

Create  syncopated rhythms with the use of tap shoes. Class consists of warm-up, technique, progressions, and combinations. Student’s ability to understand and count music will be developed.

 

Modern Dance   

Focuses on the modern dance techniques of Martha Graham, Jose Limon, and Lester Horton. Explores the use of space, focusing on body alignment.

 

Hip Hop   

Dancers replicate a style of  street dance with movements including  fundamentals of popping, locking, and freezing.  This is an upbeat dance class using  today’s popular music.

 

​Lyrical  

A combination of ballet, modern and jazz dance that emphasizes control while expressing  the lyrics and mood of the music.


Contemporary   

Contemporary dance utilizes both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's emphasis on the torso.  Contemporary dance also employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation, characteristic of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used.

Stretch Class  

A 45-60 minute class that focuses on stretching and strengthening the muscles of the body.

Bollywood

Bollywood is as a dance style constantly evolving and reinventing itself by crossing cultural boundaries. The unique dance style and choreography fuses a diverse repertoire including Indian classical styles, such as Kathak, Bharata Natyam, Bhangra, and Folk; and, western staples including Hip-hop, Contemporary, and Jazz.The classes are suitable for beginners and intermediate to advanced dancers for their age, and is a GREAT way for dancers to enhance their technique , dance skills and keep their bodies in shape.


SPECIALTY CLASSES

Dance Company Technique Class

This class is a requirement for any Company member. During this class students will work on specific dance  techniques. Beginning with the ballet barre, the class will also use jazz and modern techniques. The goal is help strengthen the dancer. This class will also be taught by guest teachers throughout the year giving the students many styles to excel in.

 

Choreography Workshops

This class will be offered in 8 week sessions. This class is perfect for the more serious dancer age 13+ who would like to start choreographing with the guidance of an instructor.  This class comes with the possibility of setting choreography on volunteer students and performing and/or competing the finished dance.  This is a great way for students to gain confidence and go beyond their limits as an artist.  Information will be provided for this workshop's schedule as it becomes available.
